30 years ago a jury failed to convict the LAPD officers who broke the law in their beating of Rodney King. 36 years before that a jury failed to convict the men everybody knew lynched Emmett Till. I truly believe the Chauvin trial is on that scale. A test for America’s soul.

UPDATE: The jury in the Derek Chauvin trial is officially done for the night. It was an incredibly long day for them. Tomorrow they have their first full day of nothing but jury deliberations. It will take time for them to think through each possible charge and outcome.

This week I'd like for us to practice using the word "accountability" regarding what the conviction of Derek Chauvin would mean instead of "justice." Justice for George Floyd means Derek Chauvin being held accountable, but his conviction is a fraction of what justice means here.
